  • You’ll need copies of the previous year’s tax return, personal information for the taxpayer, spouse, and dependents, a valid ID, Social Security numbers or ITIN, bank account information for direct deposit, IRS-issued Identity Protection PIN (if applicable), and EIN or TAX ID for your business. For income documents, gather W-2 forms, 1099-G, 1099-NEC/1099-MISC, 1099, Schedules K-1, rental income records, and retirement income documents (1099-R, Form 8606, SSA-1099, etc.).
  • You’ll need Forms 1099-R, 8606, SSA-1099, RRB-1099, 1099-B, 1099-S, acquisition and cost records for sold properties, Forms 1099-SA, 1099-LTC for health accounts, cryptocurrency transaction records, 1099-INT, 1099-OID, 1099-DIV, K-1s, and records of miscellaneous income like gambling winnings, scholarships, alimony received, and any business income or profit/loss statements.
  • Collect records such as Forms 1098-E for student loan interest, 1098-T for tuition paid, teacher expenses, contributions to medical savings accounts, alimony paid, childcare costs, adoption expenses, charitable contributions, investment interest expenses, and records of medical and dental expenses. Additionally, gather documents related to health insurance (Forms 1095-A, 1095-B, 1095-C), real estate taxes, state/local taxes, and any health insurance payments for self-employed workers.
  • Gather current financial statements, records of all expenses (meals, business travel, legal and accounting fees, insurance, supplies, etc.), home office deduction information (square footage, utilities, insurance), vehicle deduction records (mileage logs, fuel, lease payments, etc.), and information on commercial-use property. Also, include payroll records, copies of W-2 and W-3 forms, subcontractor payments (Form 1099-NEC for those paid $600 or more), and pension contributions.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS issues the ITIN to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but do not have, or are not eligible to obtain, a Social Security Number (SSN).
